In the summer of 2007, CIAT (International Center for Tropical Agriculture) conducted interviews with over 175 households in communities that GMCR coffee in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua and better meet the challenges and opportunities that these communities have to understand to face. Through these interviews was the issue of food security in the foreground. In April 2008, GMCR held a summit meeting with the strategic cooperative members CECOCAFEN coffee. The session uses a participatory approach that encouraged participants to eliminate possible strategies to list flacos months apart. Two months after this strategic summit, GMCR received a proposal for a pilot project CECOCAFEN past three years to fund.
